My name is Shallon NUWAMANYA. I grew up in a small village in rural Uganda, where life was too tough after the death of my father. I was born in 2001 and dad died in 2007. My mother was and is still a peasant who struggled to put food on the table everyday. Despite the humble background, my mother always believed in the power of education to change our lives for the better.
My journey to education began when I started primary school at the local government school. The conditions were far from ideal, with limited resources, poor infrastructure and overcrowded classrooms. However, I was determined and worked hard to excel in my studies.
As I progressed, I faced many challenges. I often had to walk several miles to get to school, sometimes on an empty stomach in the scorching sun or pouring rain. I struggled to pay school fees, get books and even a school uniform. But with the help of some generous sponsors who valued education, I was able to stay in school and continue with education.
Despite the odds, I managed to excel in my studies and was awarded a scholarship to continue with to high school. It was a big chance for me, and I walked no more from home to school. I stayed in school for all years at high school. I made sure I worked harder to keep up with my classmates.
After graduating from high school, I was awarded another scholarship to attend university. This was a dream come true for me, as I have always wanted to pursue higher education. I was thrilled to study at one of the best universities in the country.
Now, I am soon finishing university though the course still requires too much expenses of which I can't afford at the moment. Support from N.V Grier foundation is going a big difference in my life as it helps me complete my journey. My sincere thanks to Owen Grier for the constant support and love towards my university education. Without forgetting my beloved mother and all the generous people who made sure I reached university, I appreciate.
Through the life I have experienced and help from people, I wish more and more donors can come on board and render their help. They are still many struggling school going Ugandans who also wish and treasure some much education but can't make it through. They really need help so that their dreams come true.
Otherwise, I hope to use my future to a make a positive impact in the world.
I was born in Buhweju western Uganda. Growing up in a remote village, my dream was to be a pilot. However, I later decided to be a teacher because I was inspired by my English language teacher. I enrolled at Kyambogo University and did a Bachelor's of Arts in Education specializing in Literature in English and English language. I first taught in 2015 as a student teacher. My greatest moments with students are the unique dramatic role plays. I have dealt with students since 2015 up to date. What excites me is that every day, I learn something new from students. That's why I couldn't hesitate when I was called upon to serve as a tutor and as a volunteer at Noel and Valerie Grier Foundation. Tutoring at the foundation in the bid to raise funds for the unprivileged children of Jamaica and Uganda, has given me a chance to give back to society with passion and at the same time, has given me new experience with online teaching in which an interaction with the virtual family of my students and I has been created. It's amazing how with technology one creates a single class of different students from different countries
